Orton-Gillingham Training: Certified Level

(Part 1 Coursework, Part 2 Coursework, and Practicum)

Prerequisite: OGA Associate Level Certification

This OGA Certified Level course is intended for individuals who have achieved Associate Level membership with the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) and wish to hone their practice. The Certified Level member will be able to explain the underlying principles, concepts and procedures of the Orton-Gillingham approach and how it teaches the structure of the language. They will be able to interpret diagnostic evaluations, administer relevant diagnostic testing, write case histories and work with complex students.

This course meets the requirements of the OGA, and is taught by Accredited Training Fellows of the OGA.

Upcoming Orton-Gillingham Training: Certified Level Course Dates

Part 1: July 15-19, 2024 (8:00 am – 4:00 pm) – hybrid: online or in-person at Fraser Academy, 2294 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC

The Part 1 course consists of two portions: Coursework July 15-19, 2024, as well as an additional series of sessions in the following school year. The additional sessions are listed below, and will be fully online.

  • Profile Sessions: September 28, October 19, and November 16, 2024 (8:00 am – 12:00 pm)
  • Annotated Lesson: January 18, 2025 (8:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Part 2: TBA

Applications for the OG Training: Certified Level Practicum can be made at any time. The practicum may run in parallel to coursework. OG Training: Certified Level Part 1 and Part 2 courses can be taken in any order.

After completion of OG Training: Certified Level Part 1 and Part 2, and the Practicum, applications for the Certified Level of membership to the Orton-Gillingham Academy can be made.

  • OG Training: Certified Level Part 1: 50 hours: 30 hours Synchronous & 20 hours Asynchronous
  • OG Training: Certified Level Part 2: 50 hours: 30 hours Synchronous & 20 hours Asynchronous

There will be 20 hours of Asynchronous online work over 6 days. 

Synchronous Online Training

  • 9:00 am – 10:30 am Synchronous Online Training 
  • 10:30 am – 10:45 am Break
  • 10:45 am – 12:00 pm Synchronous Online Training 
  • 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Lunch 
  • 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm Synchronous Online Training

  • Formal vs. informal assessment
  • Interpreting test results and using the knowledge to guide remediation

Online Synchronous & Asynchronous 

  • OGA Certified Level requirements
  • Understanding the effects of dyslexia
  • Phonological/phonemic awareness 
  • Alphabet awareness 
  • Intermediate phonic/spelling rules & generalizations 
  • Advanced history of the English language 
  • Advanced morphology 
  • Advanced grammar 
  • Writing 
  • Oral reading 
  • Reading comprehension instruction 
  • The Certified lesson plan

OG Training: Certified Level Practicum

  • Over a minimum of 2 academic years
  • Minimum of 10 observations teaching 1:1 lessons
  • 45-60 lessons twice per week on nonconsecutive days

To apply for the OG Training: Certified Level, submit an application package via the “Apply Now” button. The requirements are as follows:

  • Verification of OGA Associate Level Certification
  • Previous Orton-Gillingham based or related training (1 paragraph input on application form)
  • Resume (attach as a PDF)
  • Letter of Reference (attach as a PDF)

OG Training: Certified Level Part 1: $1500

OG Training: Certified Level Part 2: $1500

OG Training: Certified Level Practicum

  • $225 per observation

  • Credit card: Payments can be made at request.plastiq.com/pay-fraser-academy1 (this option incurs a 2.4% administration fee charged by Plastiq).

Ms. Chow is an Accredited Training Fellow of the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA), an International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Certified Dyslexia Specialist, and a Professionally Certified Educational Therapist (PCET) through the National Institute of Learning Development (NILD).
