Executive Function Services
Knowledge is only half the equation. Students also need the skills to manage their learning and put their knowledge into action.
Our 1:1 Executive Function (EF) Coaching helps students develop the skills and strategies they need to work more independently – from planning and organization to focus and writing.
Two Ways We Support Learners
- General Executive Function Coaching:
- Planning & Organization: Breaking down assignments, prioritizing tasks, and managing time.
- Focus & Follow-Through: Getting started, staying focused, managing distractions, and completing tasks.
- Study & Memory: Learning how to retain information, prepare for tests, and develop effective study habits.
- Executive Function for Writing:
- Planning & Organizing Ideas: Getting thoughts out of their head and organizing them into a logical structure.
- Sentence & Paragraph Structure: Building clear sentences and cohesive paragraphs.
- Essay Writing & Editing: Planning multi-paragraph writing, developing ideas, drafting, revising, and editing independently.
We build the skills students need to manage school work independently:
We help students turn ideas into clear, organized writing:
Executive Functions (EF) are a set of cognitive skills used to:
- self-regulate
- plan, prioritize, and organize,
- self-monitor and maintain attention
- manage time
- make a multitude of daily decisions
Challenges with EF can make it difficult to sustain focus, follow directions, reflect on performance, and learn. Difficulties with executive functions ultimately can get in the way of reaching goals. Learning specific EF strategies are beneficial to fully access potential at school, work, or other areas of life.
Generic study tips and planners aren’t enough when a student doesn’t yet have the skills to use them. Our 1:1 coaching explicitly teaches executive function skills, applies them to real academic tasks, and builds habits that support greater independence.
Importantly, our model can extend beyond general EF skills to include reading comprehension and written composition.
Our coaching is designed for middle school, high school, and post-secondary students who are capable of learning the material but need support developing the skills to manage it independently.
EF coaching may be a good fit for students who:
- Struggle to get started on assignments or follow through to completion.
- Feel overwhelmed by multi-step projects, deadlines, or heavy workloads.
- Need support with planning, organization, time management, and studying.
- Find reading comprehension or written composition more challenging than expected.
- Have ADHD, dyslexia, or other learning differences that impact executive functioning.
- Want to become more independent and confident learners.
Executive function skills are teachable. Research shows these skills can be strengthened through explicit instruction, guided practice, and repeated application over time. Our coaching model is built on these evidence-based principles, helping students develop habits and strategies that transfer into everyday learning.
Based on the research of Adele Diamond and colleagues on executive function development and intervention.
For many students, Executive Function Coaching is a natural next step after completing structured literacy instruction such as Orton-Gillingham (OG).
While OG builds foundational reading and spelling skills, older students are often expected to independently manage increasingly complex reading, writing, and academic demands. Executive Function Coaching helps bridge that gap by teaching the planning, organization, and self-monitoring skills needed to apply those literacy skills successfully across subjects.
Our coaches can also provide targeted support with reading comprehension and written composition, helping students organize ideas, structure writing, extract key information from text, and approach complex assignments with greater confidence and independence.
