Supporting Students in North Vancouver

49651

Margaret M. is a Learning Support Worker with the North Vancouver School District. She was inspired to work in the school system after discovering that her daughter was dyslexic. “I wanted to support others going through the process that my daughter went through.”

Margaret had previously taken courses in structured literacy, and was interested in further developing her knowledge. That’s when she came across FAx‘s Orton-Gillingham training. “I was in a role at school where I was helping students learn how to read. I wanted to be the best support for them. That’s why I took the OG course last summer, and it has been very beneficial.”

Currently in the process of completing her practicum, Margaret is implementing some of the strategies learned from her OG training directly with her students. “I’ve noticed my teaching practice has changed. In particular, my lesson planning and ability to progress-monitor each student has really shifted.” Margaret has also been able to develop more individualized plans for each of her students. “I’ve been able to really clarify where each of my students are at with their literacy skills, and develop lesson plans to meet them at their level of understanding. They feel reassured and have that sense of accomplishment when they get through the lesson plan.”

Other teachers are also seeing the benefits of Margaret’s OG lessons. “The feedback is wonderful. Other classroom teachers notice the difference when students have OG lessons throughout the year. They can see the progress.”
