October is Dyslexia Awareness Month!
Each October, we join communities around the world in marking Dyslexia Awareness Month. It is a time to celebrate our students, highlight the unique strengths of those with dyslexia, and raise vital understanding and awareness.
We are excited to share that at our request the Province of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver have both proclaimed October as Dyslexia Awareness Month. This recognition reflects the growing awareness and support for individuals with dyslexia across our province.
As a community, we look forward to celebrating our students and continuing to shine a light on the importance of early identification, structured literacy, and the many talents and achievements of those with dyslexia.

Flag Raising
To kick off Dyslexia Awareness Month, members of our Student Council proudly raised the Dyslexia Awareness flag that was gifted to us from Dyslexia Canada.
Be sure to check it out outside of Fraser Academy the next time you are in the neighbourhood.
Lighting Schedule
Landmarks across the world will be lit up in red to raise awareness and show support for Dyslexia Awareness Month. On Wednesday, October 8, Vancouver and Victoria will light up these landmarks:
- Canada Place Sails of Light, Vancouver
- City Hall & Burrard St. Bridge, Vancouver
- Legislative Assembly of BC, Victoria
Visit Dyslexia Canada’s website for more information.
Mark it Read Day
As part of Dyslexia Canada’s Mark it Read campaign, Fraser Academy will be celebrating Mark it Read Day on October 17!
Students are invited to wear a red shirt with their regular uniform bottoms.
The FA Student Council will host a BBQ for students.
Community Education Night: Risky Play with Dr. Mariana Brussoni
Join us on October 28, from 7:00-8:30pm, for our first Community Education Night of the school year, featuring Dr. Mariana Brussoni, Director of the Human Early Learning Partnership at UBC. Dr. Brussoni will explore the benefits of risky play, highlighting how unstructured outdoor learning can reduce anxiety, support mindfulness, and enhance classroom outcomes for students with learning differences and ADHD.
