Exploring Beyond the Classroom: The Fraser Academy Odyssey Program
At Fraser Academy, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens outside the classroom. That’s the idea behind Odyssey—a transformative outdoor education program featuring 50 days of local fieldwork and multi-day expeditions spread across two semesters of the Grade 11 year.
Odyssey is built on the idea that real-world, hands-on experiences foster growth in a way that traditional classrooms can’t. Over the course of a year, students take on a series of progressively challenging expeditions across British Columbia—from sea kayaking in the Broken Group Islands to multi-day backpacking on the iconic West Coast Trail.
For many students, it’s a chance to reimagine what learning can look like.
“I love the outdoors, and I find it hard to focus in the classroom—this program integrates something I love into my learning,” says Keigan C. Others, like James W., are excited by how the outdoor environment helps them absorb knowledge: “I really like biology now; seeing and connecting with nature makes it much more interesting.”
Each trip challenges students physically, socially, and emotionally. Whether navigating rough terrain, collaborating in backcountry campsites, or learning to complete a wet exit from a tandem kayak, they build resilience, self-reliance, and leadership.
“The West Coast Trail—it will be the ultimate test of our group dynamic and a way to push ourselves both individually and as a collective,” says Grade 11 student Katie B-A. “I embrace the challenge!”
Odyssey’s interdisciplinary, inquiry-based curriculum deepens the experience even further. “Students are encouraged to pursue their individual curiosities and connect field experiences to texts, artworks, and scientific studies,” says Ms. Hurth, a teacher in the program. “They explore and communicate in ways that suit their learning styles, while discovering their own capacities as learners, leaders, and stewards of the land.”
But Odyssey isn’t just about the adventure—it’s about self-discovery. Many students use the experience to step away from technology, reflect, and learn more about themselves.
“I wanted to take a break from technology and my phone addiction,” shares Kingsley R. “I came into this program hoping to grow and get more perspective on that whole issue.”
Through it all, students are supported by experienced outdoor educators and a peer community that shares their passion for learning through experience. The result is a powerful, life-shaping journey that builds confidence, connection, and a lasting sense of capability.
