Developing Organizational Skills with EF Coaching

51094

Bernadett A. first came across executive function (EF) skills when she took an Executive Function and the Writing Process workshop with FAx, Fraser Academy’s Outreach Centre. She found it useful for her role as an elementary school teacher in Vancouver, and soon realized that her son could benefit from developing his EF skills. “He needed help with organizing his tasks and managing his time.”

Her son was in Grade 11 when Bernadett enrolled him in FAx’s Executive Function Coaching program in September 2023. “He initially didn’t believe that it would help him, but by October, he started to see the benefit of the program. It became something he enjoyed doing.”

Bernadett noticed that her son was able to connect well with his tutor in the one-on-one setting, which helped him develop his organizational, time management, and planning skills. “He is the kind of kid who needs to have a trusting relationship with a teacher to learn. It’s hard to build relationships in large classes. Working one-on-one with a tutor was very beneficial.”

EF Coaching also instilled a sense of confidence in her son. “His self-worth was so low before.” This translated into better engagement at school, and more academic success. “Things started to make sense to him. He felt accomplished and rewarded once he completed his schoolwork. I could see that he wanted to take control of his learning. He wasn’t doing that before. He became a different kid.”
